Osteoporosis may be present in more than one in four people with diabetes, according to a latest scientific study.
The study published in BMC Endocrine Disorders in its January 2023 issue found 27.67 percent prevalence of Osteoporosis in 11,603 individuals with diabetes. The purpose of this study is to provide clinical guidance for prevention, diagnosis, and control strategies in light of the persistently rising prevalence of Osteoporosis and diabetes mellitus.
Osteoporosis, one of the most common metabolic skeletal disorders, is characterised by decreased bone mass and increased destruction of bone microstructure, which consequently increases bone fragility and fracture risk. The disease tends to occur in older people and individuals with predisposing health condition and has been seen as a serious public health condition attributable to its high morbidity, mortality, and healthcare costs. Among the risk factors for Osteoporosis, investigators have identified diabetes mellitus (DM).
“Worldwide, a high prevalence of [osteoporosis] was found in patients with [type 2 diabetes mellitus],” reported the investigators, Xueying Liu, Fuhua Chen, Lei Liu and Qiu Zhang. “Therefore, strong measures to prevent and treat osteoporosis in diabetic patients are required.”
Diabetes mellitus has developed into a global health concern that poses a major hazard to human health. And it is associated with an increased risk of fracture, particularly the one in the hip, despite normal or high bone mineral density (BMD).
In the last few years, multiple research has focused on the relationship between type 2 diabetes mellitus and Osteoporosis. In China, a meta-analysis reported that the prevalence of Osteoporosis in type 2 diabetics was 44.8 and 37.0 percent in women and men respectively and a cross-sectional study demonstrated that the incidence of the disease was 5.0 and 20.6 percent among men and women, respectively.
However, the investigators said, studies on the prevalence of Osteoporosis in diabetes patients worldwide have not been well documented.
