Since the coronavirus outbreak, doctors and nurses in Wuhan have been fighting on the front lines treating patients. Ling, a nurse from Wuhan shares her personal account on the deserted roads, new patients and helpful taxi drivers.
Ling, a nurse who works at one of the hospitals in Wuhan, the epicentre of the deadly coronavirus outbreak in China, has been documenting her life since the Chinese New Year’s eve. She lives by herself in Wuhan, while her family lives in another city of Hubei province.
Here is her story
Date: Feb 6
Weather: Rain
Location: Wuhan
Today it’s pouring with strong winds blowing in Wuhan. I dreaded Tsunami and almost ran for my life. But, then, I woke up from the nightmare and saw it was only 6’o clock in the morning.
As I started walking for my work, the rain had started to get lighter. Once crowded, the street looked completely stranded today, with not even a single car to be seen on the road.
I could vaguely see someone from afar, standing still, holding umbrella tight. After covering half the distance, I could see it was a policeman. And further away, I could spot shining orange bodies moving. They must be the sanitation workers, I assume.
A colleague who is suspected to be infected with coronavirus is hospitalised today. He is moved to our department. I am the one responsible to take care of him. He told me, he doesn’t want to just lay here in the hospital bed and that he wants to recover to be able to join back work soon. I felt sorrowful, inexplicably.
I took the “love taxi” home. Because of the lockdown, there is no public transportation running in Wuhan. So, a group of taxi drivers started the “love taxi” initiative to drive doctors and nurses around.
I asked the taxi driver: “Thanks so much for your hard work. Do you receive any subsidy?”
He replied: “I wouldn’t have come if it was for money. I don’t even care if I get money or not. I just know that one of our taxi drivers is already infected with the virus, but I am still here!”
It is still raining outside. But, I think, the rain will eventually stop. And, it will be a bright clear blue sky again!
