A look at the COVID-19 curve in India’s states

As India races to No 1 in the global ranking of countries with the most COVID-19 cases, we look at how the number of infections has progressed in some of its States and Union territories.

Maharashtra records the highest number of COVID-19 cases in India

The state has recorded over 12.4 lakh cases as of 23 September and continues to record close to 20k new cases every day, doubling every 80 days.

States with a high prevalence of COVID-19 

While Tamil Nadu’s curve has flattened,  Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka continue to see a surge in cases. Delhi’s COVID-19 curve shows a peak in cases between late-August and September, after a relatively flat period after June.

States with a medium prevalence of COVID-19 

Among the states that currently record less than 1 lakh cases, Chattisgarh shows the highest spike in cases between August and September. Haryana, Punjab, and J&K show similar trends in infection growth.

States with a low prevalence of COVID-19 

There is variation in the progression of COVID-19 infections in low prevalence states. Sikkim and Mizoram have recorded slow growth in infections since the beginning, while the Andaman and Nicobar islands and Nagaland show complete cycles. Chandigarh, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh continue to record steady growth in infections.
