Fact-check: Indian politician wrongly claims biryani diminishes male sex drive

Biryani

Traditionally, spices have been used in the management of male sexual disorders. However, we need more human trials and scientific research to substantiate these findings.

Recently, an Indian politician, Rabindra Nath Ghosh, forced two local biryani shops in West Bengal to shut down, alleging that the spices used in the dish reduced male sex drive. In no time, the news got viral, triggering a plethora of misinformation about the effect of certain foods on men’s libido.

So, here’s the key question: Can biryani – a popular rice dish peppered with spices and further layered with spiced meat or vegetables – have any effect on the male sex drive?

To answer that question, we first need to identify the spices used in cooking biryani. Traditionally, in India, people use poppy seeds, cumin, cardamom, star anise, mace, cloves, coriander seeds, nutmeg, and cinnamon. The spice concentration may vary based on personal preferences and regional flavours.

At First Check, when we did a keyword search on each spice and its effect on sexual health, we came across several studies on how spices can boost sexual health. For instance, a recent study finds that cumin seeds have the potential to treat male infertility. Another study on rats suggests that star anise extracts improved the fertility potential, while cinnamon significantly increased sexual function in aged rats, as per one more study.

There is perhaps some scientific rationale for the traditional use of these spices in the management of male sexual disorders. However, we need more human trials and scientific research to substantiate these findings.

It’s safe to conclude though that the claims made by the Indian politician are misleading and don’t have any scientific backing. Trust facts, not rumours. Stay informed with First Check.
