Becerra reaffirmed US government’s commitment to health security and preparedness for future threats
“India has come a long way. The G20 presidency in India emphasizing global healthcare is an indicator of the country’s potential to become a world leader,” said Xavier Becerra, the United States Secretary of Health and Human Services, who is attending the G20 Health Ministers’ Meeting in Gandhinagar, Gujarat in his address on Friday.
Becerra reaffirmed US government’s commitment to health security and preparedness for future threats. “Our focus lies in readying ourselves for forthcoming public health emergencies, averting them, and advancing global health priorities holistically,” he said.
Becerra said there is the need to prevent another pandemic akin to Covid-19.
“As the world confronts the imperative of preventing another pandemic, it’s imperative for every country to recognize its role and contribute to addressing future health emergencies,” he said. “The lessons of Covid-19 have underscored the importance of collaborative action, underlining the significance of forums like the G20.”
Becerra also mentioned India’s pivotal role in aiding the US in meeting its pharmaceutical demands and proactively addressing potential health crises. He, however, stressed the need for Indian pharmaceutical companies to adhere to US standards to sustain their exports to the United States.
