On the contrary, some studies say that the consumption of dairy products like milk, ghee, and yoghurt can increase the risk of prostate cancer.
A viral tweet circulating on social media claims that cow milk and ghee is the best medicine to treat cancer patients.
We got a user request on our WhatsApp API service asking to debunk this claim. The claim made in the tweet is misleading.
First of all, the author of the tweet doesn’t mention which type of cancer can be cured by cow ghee and milk.
On the contrary, some studies say that the consumption of dairy products like milk, ghee, and yoghurt can increase the risk of prostate cancer.
Some other studies claim that consuming dairy products may reduce colorectal cancer, the cancer of the colon or rectum, the lowest parts of the digestive tract.
Yet another study says that there is no link between dairy products and reducing the risk of stomach cancer.
It is really confusing as one study says it is good to consume milk and ghee and another warns it is not.
For further clarification, we contacted Dr Anthony Pais, Co-founder and Clinical Director of Cytecare Cancer Hospital, Bangalore. He said the claim was not true as “no evidence backs it.”
“The human studies conducted to check the connection between milk products and cancer are observational in nature,” Dr Pais said. “They are just suggestive evidence and can’t be taken as proof.”
Consuming a diversified diet with dairy products and a wide variety of vegetables and meat is, however, healthy.
The current guidelines for consuming dairy products recommend 2-3 cups or servings per day only.
